TL;DR

Start with the markets a company belongs in. Then read its standing against the relevant rivals, keeping the market, model, and date in view.

Start with the markets a company belongs in. Then read its standing against the relevant rivals, keeping the market, model, and date in view.

Start with the comparison that matters

Standing is useful when you know which market and rivals are being compared. The same company can serve different buyers, compete in different locations, and face different rivals. A strong position in one market does not establish leadership everywhere. The Market Map gives those comparisons a place before you measure standing.

The map is the whole picture

Your Market Map shows the markets buyers compare the company in, who belongs in each, and which nearby markets were ruled out. A board represents one market within that wider picture. Geography and industry can change which comparison is relevant.

Read standing inside the selected market

Use standing to understand how the company compares with the rivals on that board. Keep the selected model and date attached to the result. Your standing describes that specific comparison; it does not apply to every market or predict revenue.

Read the evidence behind your position

Read the associations and available evidence alongside the result. Where does the company appear strong? Where is a rival better established? Where is there too little information to draw a conclusion? Missing evidence is a reason to investigate, not proof that a company is weak.

Use the result in a client conversation

Start with the market, explain the comparison, and show the evidence supporting the point you want to make. Your team decides what the findings mean for its positioning and communications work. Remeasure when you need a fresh view, comparing like with like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why define the market before measuring standing?

Defining the markets and rivals gives each measurement a clear comparison.

Can my standing differ across markets and models?

Yes. Read each result with its market, model, and date. Your position in one context does not describe your standing everywhere.
